Where a ‘dry’ system of temperature control is the preferred option, Malvern Instruments offers a Peltier based technology offering the best possible compromise between the inherent characteristics of a ‘dry’ system and the particularly demanding characteristics of asphalt binders.
The unit can be used with the Bohlin CVO-ADS, CVOR or Gemini rheometers and is interchangeable with other controllers, including a conventional DSR water jacket system, using Easy-Swap technology.
The design uses a heated upper oven enclosure to provide a thermally stable sample environment and includes a conductively heated lower plate. This is a major distinction between Bohlin’s design and other commercially available alternatives – it reduces sample lag, which is the main disadvantage of dry systems and a major problem with radiative (rather than conductive) designs. Another advantage of the Malvern design is that because of its inherent characteristics, the calibration of the unit is stable and does not require re-adjustment between routine maintenance visits.
